History
In 1848, gold was discovered near the American River, just east of what is now Sacramento; and the world converged en masse. Highway 49 runs from Reno to Yosemite (appx 300 miles) at the base of the Sierras and connects Gold Rush towns, including Jackson, along the way. Much of that history is displayed in local museums and active mines. In present day, grapes are the “new gold “ and Amador County hosts over 40 + wineries rivaling Napa and Sonoma, minus the high prices and congestion.
